Blackbox Arts & Media was established in 1998 and since 2000 has been a resident organisation at The Buddle Arts Centre in Wallsend. The company's activity is determined by an artistic policy that has the following key elements: Blackbox is constituted as a non profit making organisation regulated by charitable aims and objectives. The core creative team consists of Artistic Director Joe Price and four Associate Artists; visual artist and film maker Suzi Robinson, web artist Johannes Kratzsch and circus and street performance duo Sophie and Jacob McGrath, (who tour under the name Dream State Circus).

Since it's formation Blackbox has executed wide range of projects including:

From the Mouth of Ubu. An experimental multi media piece of work created and performed at Live Theatre. From the Mouth of Ubu gathered a company of ten young artists, (aged 18-30), and used both Alfred Jarry's Ubu trilogy and Shakespeares Macbeth as source material to create a multi layered multi media journey.

Virtually Famous. Virtually Famous was a thirty minute film commissioned by Generator and premiered at Newcastle Playhouse as part of the Radio 1 Sound City Festival. The film, (shot and edited on digital equipment within a schedule of ten days), took a tongue in cheek look at a year in the life of a band struggling to establish themselves.

in I side I out. As part of the Buddle Arts Centre's anniversary celebration in September 2001 Blackbox was commissioned to create some exterior multi media work for the Gala Event. in I side I out consisted of three inter-linked pieces of work situated in the main Buddle Arts centre car park. The work referenced the past, present and possible future of the building.

The Buddle Arts Centre North Wing. In 2002 Blackbox began a programme of work designed to regenerate the North Wing of the Buddle Arts Centre and reorganise the building so that it could serve as an integrated resource centre to support emerging artists and new ideas. This programme of work followed a dual and linked strategy. The different spaces and resources were gradually enhanced, and each phase of development was tested by organising different multi art projects.

The regeneration of the Buddle Arts Centre North Wing was a huge undertaking, and between 2002 and 2006 the North Wing Projects Unit supported over 40 different pieces of work. Blackbox has now refocused its energy to concentrate on the development of multi-media and digital work. Artists or groups interested in mounting projects should now contact The Buddle Arts Centre direct for advice about resource support. Telephone 0191 200 7132
